Greying of hair is a natural part of the ageing process. But for some, graying turns into a night mere as it begins early. The reasons are plenty. Hair has a tendency to lose its natural color with advancing age but premature graying is a morbid condition and it makes even the young to start looking older. The hair, which is an appendage of the skin, is composed of the same kinds of cells as are found in epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. The sebaceous glands of the scalp, secrete an oily sunstance called sebum, which is the source of nutrition, luster and blackness of the hair.

Hair cannot be fed externally as such nourishment must come from the bloodstream. Our hair starts to turn grey due to a variety of factors like nutritional intake, hereditary and lifestyle conditions. The most important amongst them in determining hair color is melanin, which is produced by melanocytes that is found within the layers of the hair follicle.
