We always hear this statement "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." If we think about this literally, is this really true? Does eating an apple a day guarantee us of good health? I am asking this because my sister keeps on asking me about this and I don't know what answer to give her.

I found this

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
By Beth Beutler
1 ?An apple a day keeps the doctor away,? or so it has been claimed. According to legend, the only time Johnny Appleseed got sick was at the time of his death. Since he was born on September 26, 1774 and lived until 1845, that is over 80 years without being sick!

2 Can you imagine never being sick? You probably catch at least one cold per year, or maybe more. Do you ever have to go to a doctor or be put on an antibiotic?

3 I've read that apple juice is a very healthy thing to drink, and it helps you fight off viruses and colds. Perhaps eating an apple would do the same thing. That may be where we get the saying about apples keeping doctors away!

I think it is actually because apples contain fluoride, which helps fight cavities. So, logically, an apple a day would help keep the dentist, or doctor, away. This is what I have come to realize myself, I'm not sure if there is any truth to it. When you think about it, it sounds very logical. I don't know about the 3 reasons cmick posted....

not only those reasons, but the fact that it contains a fair amount of water is a good thing too ... i notice that by eating an apple with a meal, it cuts down on me pigging out on more caloric foods ...

Wow, great answers. Now I know what to say to my sister. Good thing it is good for fighting cavities. My sister hates to eat fruits. But maybe when I tell her it would help her not to see the dentist again she might eat it. She really doesn?t like to visit her dentist again.

Actually, eating an apple would never replace going to the dentist or brushing your teeth. It is just a little extra help, nothing major. Getting a cleaning every 6 months and brushing your teeth are vital to your teeth's health. Apples just help in the fight :D

i eat at least on apple per day and this is good for my health; i don't know if it really keeps the doctor away but the truth is that i have not visited a doctor from 1 year now. The apple however is good if you want to avoid the dentist.
