The countdown has begun for Winky Wright?s next fight, December 2 against Ike Quartey in Tampa. Arguably the top pound for pound fighter took questions from the media Tuesday in a conference call that revolved mostly around his past and possible future bout with middleweight champion, Jermain Taylor.
?Does Jermain [Taylor] want to get back in the ring with me? I?m not ducking anybody,? Wright said in response to being asked if a rematch would happen. Contracts had been drawn for a December 9th match, but according to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer (Golden Boy has a working alliance with Wright's Winky Promotions), Taylor did not want the fight until after the New Year.
?I want to fight the best fighters, and I want to fight them now," said Wright. "But I want to be treated right. If we fight again, now it?s going to be a 50/50 fight or there will be no fight.?
Even though Taylor is the recognized world champion, Wright feels he deserves an equal purse in a rematch with Taylor. ?In the first fight, we fought to a draw. If we fought to a draw, that means we?re even. And I fought in his home town." Wright continued, ?I feel like I got robbed. He was fighting to keep me off of him. He wasn't fighting to win....In the last round when I didn't take the fight to him and danced around, what did he do? Danced around right with me. He didn't do anything in the twefth round and I did more than him and I lost the round.....at least I threw some punches.
Despite all the Taylor talk, Wright was very clear in letting the media know he was focused on Ike Quartey. ?We?re training hard for this fight. I?m looking forward to it. I want to give the fans what they want to see, a tough fight, and I think Quartey is just that. I?m focused on Quartey. I?m going to handle that, and then I?ll sit down and look toward future fights.?

The Quartey fight is not going to be competitive. Wright is going to dominate easily, but that is not a surprise or even a big deal at this point. If you're past-prime, or have any weakness, there are two fighters who will most definitely exploit that. Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright.

All I want to see from Wright is a rematch with Taylor. It's the only interesting fight for him in my opinion.
